Therapeutic Actions

Polypeptide antibiotic; mechanism of action against Mycobacterium tuberculosis unknown.


Indications



  • Treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis that is not responsive to first-line antituberculosis agents but is sensitive to capreomycin in conjunction with other antituberculosis agents



Available Forms

Solution for injection—1 g/10 mL


Dosages

Always give in combination with other antituberculotics.

Adults

1 g daily (not to exceed 20 mg/kg/day) IM or IV for 60–120 days, followed by 1 g IM two to three times weekly for 12–24 mo. Can also give IV infusion after further dilution in 100 mL 0.9% sodium chloride and infuse over 60 min.

Pediatric patients

Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Geriatric patients or patients with renal impairment
