Therapeutic Actions
Selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to specific tissue receptors found in vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland; this action blocks the vasoconstrictive effect of the renin-angiotensin system as well as the release of aldosterone, leading to a decrease in BP.
Indications
Treatment of hypertension, alone or with other antihypertensives
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to components of the drug, pregnancy (use during second or third trimester can cause fetal injury or even death), lactation.
Use cautiously with renal impairment, volume or salt depletion.
Available Forms
Tablets—40, 80 mg
Dosages
Adults
80 mg/day PO; for patients on high dose of diuretics or who are volume-depleted, consider a starting dose of 40 mg/day and titrate if tolerated.
Pediatric patients younger than 18 yr
Safety and efficacy not established.
