Direct activated thrombin inhibitor


Therapeutic Actions

Inhibits free and clot-bound activated thrombin. Thrombin enables the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin fibers during the clotting cascade; inhibiting this process prevents clot development. Apixaban had no direct effect on platelet aggregation but does inhibit platelet aggregation induced by thrombin.


Indications



  • Reduction of the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.



Available Forms

Tablets—2.5, 5 mg


Dosages

Adults

5 mg PO bid. For patients 80 yr or older, body weight 60 kg or less, serum creatinine 1.5 mg/dL or more, 2.5 mg PO bid.

Pediatric patients

Safety and efficacy not established.
