QUICK LOOK AT THE CHAPTER AHEAD
Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) involves the eating away of the stomach lining and other nearby areas of the GI tract and is most often caused by the bacteria, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).1 Approximately 10% of the US population experiences PUD at some time.1
There are several categories of drugs that are used to aid in the treatment of PUD. The combination of bismuth and antibiotics is used to remove the infection of H. pylori. There are currently three combination drugs that are used for this purpose: bismuth subsalicylate, metronidazole, and tetracycline (Helidac); amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and lansoprazole (Prevpac); and ranitidine and bismuth citrate (Tritec). Other groups of drugs used to control the acid produced in the stomach are Histamine-2 antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, antacids, and two miscellaneous drugs. These drug categories will be discussed in detail.
