ANTIULCER DRUGS CLIENT TEACHING


Histamine-2 Antagonists



  • Do not breast-feed.


  • Report GI bleeding to physician.


  • Can take with or without food


  • No activities requiring concentration until drug effects are known.


  • No smoking, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or alcohol


  • Do not abruptly stop drug.



Proton Pump Inhibitors



  • Do not breast-feed.


  • Report diarrhea and any urinary changes.




Antacids



  • Take before and after meals and at hour of sleep.


  • Shake liquids.


  • Do not take other drugs with these drugs; separate by at least 1 hour.


  • If on low sodium diet, client must take antacid that is low sodium magaldrate (Riopan).


  • Chew tablets and take a full glass of milk or water afterwards.





Miscellaneous Drugs


Misoprostol (Cytotec)



  • Do not breast-feed.


  • Do not get pregnant.


  • Report menstrual irregularities.


  • Don’t take magnesium antacids as this increases risk of diarrhea.



Sucralfate (Carafate)
