ANTILIPEMIC DRUGS CLIENT TEACHING
  • Instruct client on proper nutrition and exercise.
  • Notify health care provider of continuous gastrointestinal (GI) upset or distress, bleeding, yellow skin discoloration, decreased libido, or dysuria.
  • Powder or granule preparations should be mixed with liquids or food.
  • Do not change or stop medication without consulting with health care provider.
  • Consult with health care provider before taking herbal remedies or OTC drugs.
  • Other drugs should be taken 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after bile acid sequestrants.
  • Periodic laboratory and clinical monitoring are indicated.
  • Notify health care provider immediately if experiencing muscle pain.
ACTION
Bile Acid Sequestrants
  • Combine with bile acids in the small intestine to form insoluble complexes excreted through stool, which reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and serum cholesterol levels
