ANALGESICS CLIENT TEACHING


Opioid Agonists



  • Do not adjust dosage without talking to physician.


  • Do not stop taking abruptly—taper drug with direction by physician.


  • Do not breast-feed.


  • No alcohol or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants while taking this drug


  • No activities that require concentration



  • Move slowly to sitting or standing positions to avoid or lessen hypotension.


  • Cough regularly.


  • No over-the-counter (OTC) drugs until consulting with physician

Opioid Antagonists



  • After receiving drug, relate any postoperative pain to health care provider.
