Therapeutic Actions

Normal blood protein; maintains plasma osmotic pressure and is important in maintaining normal blood volume.


Indications



  • Emergency treatment of shock due to burns, trauma, surgery, and infections (20% or 25%); 5% for use in nonemergency cases


  • Burns: Used to prevent hemoconcentration and water and protein losses in conjunction with adequate infusions of crystalloid. 20% or 25% used beyond 24 hr.


  • Hypoproteinemia in postoperative patients, patients with sepsis, or intensive care patients (20%, 25%)


  • Adult respiratory distress syndrome: Albumin 20% or 25% with a diuretic may be helpful


  • Cardiopulmonary bypass: Preoperative blood dilution with 20% or 25% albumin. 5% may be used as adjunct therapy.


  • Acute liver failure (20% or 25%)


  • Sequestration of protein-rich fluids (20%, 25%)


  • Erythrocyte resuspension: Albumin 20% or 25% may be added to the isotonic suspension of washed red cells immediately before transfusion


  • Acute nephrosis: Albumin 20% or 25% and loop diuretic may help to control edema repeated daily for 7–10 days


  • Renal dialysis: Albumin 20% or 25% may be useful in treatment of shock and hypotension. 5% solution may be used as adjunct in hemodialysis.


  • Hyperbilirubinemia and erythroblastosis fetalis: Adjunct in exchange transfusions


  • Neonatal hemolytic disease: 20%–25% solution
