Reverse transcriptase inhibitor
Therapeutic Actions
Antiviral activity; nucleotide analogue of adenosine that inhibits hepatitis B virus reverse transcriptase and causes DNA chain termination and blocked viral replication.
Indications
Treatment of chronic hepatitis B in adults and children 12 yr and older with evidence of active viral replication and either evidence of persistent elevations in ALT or AST or histologically active disease
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to adefovir or any components of the product, lactation.
Use cautiously with pregnancy, renal impairment, signs of lactic acidosis, risk factors for severe liver disease, the elderly.

Tablets—10 mg
Dosages
Adults and children 12 yr and older
10 mg/day PO.
Pediatric patients
Safety and efficacy not established.
Patients with renal impairment
For CrCl 30–49 mL/min, 10 mg every 48 hr; for CrCl 10–29 mL/min, 10 mg every 72 hr. For hemodialysis patients, 10 mg every 7 days following dialysis. Drug not recommended for CrCl less than 10 mL/min if patient is not on dialysis.
